RZR Turbochargers/Big Turbo Differences

Do you have a 2016-2021 RZR XP Turbo, Turbo S, or 2020+ Pro XP/Turbo R/Pro S? Then you might have questions about the different turbos on these vehicles and the upgrades you can do to them.

The Pro XP & Turbo R have a 181hp base and a larger turbo vs. the 2016-2021 Turbo/Turbo S 168hp motors from the factory. The main difference is in the AR housings (snails) of the turbo to provide more airflow at less turbo speed, and less back pressure. These turbos are known to crack between the wastegate and main exhaust port. They also do not fit easily into the 168hp models/original RZR turbo chassis. This turbo is good for roughly 24psi where the 168hp is only good for around 19psi and even less at altitude.

XPT Turbo Mod (Discontinued): In 2018 we developed a turbo modification which had a bored out compressor housing, larger billet wheel, a high flow exhaust turbine wheel, and high pressure actuator. This mod is still available and works extremely well as a true sleeper setup. This turbo is around 30% more efficient than the OEM 168hp turbo.

Original Water Cooled Turbo (Discontinued in 2026): In 2019 we came out with our original style water cooled turbocharger. This was discontinued in January 2026. This adds coolant to the center section for better bearing cooling and really helps the turbo longevity. This turbo flows about 5% more than our turbo mod, but does not require a core, and has a much better stainless exhaust casting for better turbo longevity as the OEM turbo has been known to crack. Great turbocharger!

Premium Water Cooled Turbo: In fall of 2022 we updated our water cooled turbo for the 2016-2021 XPT/Turbo S models to have the Pro XP AR housings (snails). This has the XPT water cooled turbo center section, so fitment is MUCH better than bolting up a Pro XP turbocharger. We went to these housings to pick up even more airflow and less exhaust restriction. Our compressor wheel and exhaust turbine are larger and more free flowing than the OEM Pro XP/Turbo R 181hp turbo. This turbo is capable with a higher pressure actuator of running up to 29-30psi due to the 6+6 blade design which offers best performance. This is beyond what the stock motor can handle, but we upgraded so those wanting to build the motor with a billet crank/rods/pistons can use the same turbo. The one issue with going to the larger housings is turbo spool. We had to make some tune adjustments to allow this larger turbo spool as fast as our original water cooled turbo.

Standard Water Cooled Turbo: In January of 2026 we replaced the original water cooled turbo with our “standard” water cooled turbo with Pro XP style housings. This turbo is available in a 3-4psi wastegate for those wanting to use it on the 2016-2021 RZR Turbo/Turbo S platform on OEM tuning (or tuning built for the OEM turbo). This turbo is designed for better lower end power/spool and boost up to 25psi due to the compressor wheel being a straight 11 blade. For the 2016-2021 RZR turbo models, this turbo is also available with 6-7psi wastegate, but with this wastegate, it requires tune specific to this big turbo.

Pro XP/Turbo R/Pro S Models: Both the premium and standard turbo are offered for these vehicles with the 6-7psi wastegate. This works as a direct OEM replacement allowing you to run the OEM tunes, or tunes developed on the OEM turbo. The OEM turbos will wear after time, and we see exhaust castings break often. Our castings are much better quality, and we see very little(almost no) failures. Our turbos will also flow more, and create roughly 5-10% more power at the same boost level. We also offer big turbo tunes which run slightly higher boost pressure, and help with quicker spool. You can run the premium turbo up to 29-30psi of boost with a built motor (billet crank, rods, pistons), but you normally need a higher PSI crack pressure on the wastegate.

Altitude: Keep in mind the larger turbos are an even bigger deal for those running 4000ft+ in altitude. You really start to max out the stock turbochargers on these vehicles above that, especially if running any race fuel or E85 tunes. Our tunes also do a great job of allowing for more boost per altitude, where the OEM tunes cap boost tables as they know the turbo will simply not be able to produce as much air… since our turbos can, we can increase these tables.

See specific turbo listings for more information and tunes available, but this is a great overall rundown. Thanks! -Mike
