Read, License, Flash with HP Tuners VCM Editor

**A windows computer is required to flash**

– First, download the VCM Suite BETA here: https://www.hptuners.com/downloads/

Before You Begin

  • Ensure the vehicle is free of mechanical issues, as these can affect performance and the data you want to monitor.
  • IMPORTANT: Reading the vehicle will clear any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), potentially erasing valuable troubleshooting information. Always check for DTCs before proceeding. Refer to Reading and Clearing DTCs for guidance.

Reading the Vehicle

Reading a vehicle transfers calibration data from the control module(s) to VCM Editor. This process automatically detects relevant Vehicle Control Modules (VCMs) and reads them sequentially.

CAUTION: Ensure the vehicle battery is fully charged. Use a charger during the process to prevent power interruptions.

Steps to Read a Vehicle

  1. Connect Devices:
  • Attach your HP Tuners interface device to a laptop with VCM Suite installed.
  • Connect the device to the vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic port. This is found under the steering wheel column on Polaris models. For Can-Am, your diagnostic port is located by removing the panel from the top/center of your dash(near fuse boxes). It will be a gray square plug that is plugged into a dummy port.
  • **Ranger 1500 Owners**: You will need to connect the supplied CAN jumper cable to your diagnostic port, then the HP Tuners cable/device. This will allow you to read/write both the transmission and ECU at the same time.
  1. Close Other Software:
  • Close VCM Scanner if open.
  1. Open VCM Editor:
  • Close any open tune files (File > Close).
  • Click “Help” then “Resync Interface” and perform that process to update/pull all credits for your device.
  1. Prepare the Vehicle:
  • Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the vehicle). For Can-Am this means having your key fob on the ball, and tapping the start button. For Polaris models, make sure your key is all the way on (2nd click) as many have a 3 position switch.
  • Turn off accessories.
  1. Start the Reading Process:
  • In VCM Editor, select Flash > Read Vehicle.
  • Wait 10–15 seconds for the Vehicle Reader window to appear.
  • Click Read and allow the process to complete.
  • Ranger 1500 customers will also need to perform a TCM (transmission controller) read.
  1. Save and Send:
  • Save the file after the read completes. Make sure you save to a location on your computer you can find easily at a later time.
  • With vehicle power still on, click the blue “i” icon for “gather infolog for tech support”. When open, click the blue “i” icon again to gather the log. An example image is shown below. Save the log to the same location as your read file.

Writing a Tune Back to the Vehicle

Before writing a tune:

  • Ensure both the vehicle and laptop batteries are fully charged.
  • Avoid using the vehicle battery to power or charge the laptop.

Steps to Write a Tune

  1. Connect Devices:
  • Follow the same connection process as above.
  1. Prepare the Software and File:
  • Open VCM Editor and click “open”. Find the tune file that we sent to open it. Ensure the correct file for the vehicle is open(file name will be shown at the top of the software).
  1. Begin the Write Process:
  • Select Flash > Write Vehicle.
  • Turn the ignition to ON (or RUN). Follow special procedures if required.
  • Click Write and allow the process to complete.
  1. Post-Write Steps:
  • Turn off the ignition and unplug the interface cable. Wait at least 15 seconds before restarting the vehicle.

CAUTION:

  • Do not disrupt the programming session.
  • Ensure battery voltage remains above 11.5V

VCM Recovery

If a power loss occurs during critical parts of the write process, the VCM may become unrecoverable. Follow these precautions:

  • Never power down the VCM during a write failure.
  • Always use the same file to retry writing.
  • Contact AA or HP Tuners Customer Support if the issue persists.

Rewrite Entire (Advanced Feature)

This feature allows tuners to reprogram a VCM from another vehicle for a specific type. It requires caution and is only available for selected vehicle types. Misuse can cause irreparable damage to the VCM.

Troubleshooting a Failed Write

If your car won’t start after a failed write:

  1. Ensure the vehicle battery and laptop have sufficient power.
  2. Check that all cables are firmly connected.
  3. Restart VCM Editor and attempt to write again using the same file.
  4. DO NOT pull fuses or disconnect the battery.
  5. Contact Customer Support if the issue persists.
